Mhairi Rankin is an Essex-based artist, working primarily with paint in the form of figurative and portraiture art exploring the fragility of memories and human existence whilst focusing on the ordinary.
She graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Ual in 2021 after studying at both Camberwell and Chelsea
During her final year she focused her work on human existence and how stories and memories are the core of our existence, they are the legacy we leave behind more than anything else.
Mhairi continues to concentrate on the ideas of human experience, identity and fragility of life:
"Following the death of my Grandad after developing Dementia, I gained a fascination for the fragility of life and how ephemeral it is. Looking through my Grandad’s and Nana’s possessions I wanted to know more beyond the surface of who they were and what life they had lived. Alongside my dissertation, where I explored the natural storytelling instinct we have as humans and how we connect through past experience, my work was very much informed by two books
Mothers Before: Stories and Portraits of Our Mothers as We Never Saw Them - Edan Lepuck
Mum Tell Me - Elma van Vilet."
